One Sky, Seen Whole
Hosted by AuthenticAs
Good Finds CertifiedAuthenticAs was created with purpose. Eight years ago, Simon and Emma looked at what was missing... not just from the tourism sector, but from people's lives. The connection to place. The slower pace. The chance to move out of the office and into te taiao, the natural world. That need hasn't diminished. If anything, the years have only made it more so. Private, photography-led adventures for couples, families, and solo travellers who want something personal, unhurried, and beautifully documented. These aren't marketing photographs. No models, no staging... actual images from actual days out with actual people, our manuhiri, captured as it happened. Simon is the principal guide, photographer, and astronomer. He's lived in this region for 21 years, long enough to know he'll never be a true local, but long enough to have been shaped by it completely. He arrived with a BSc (Hons) in Astrophysics, an MSc in Manufacturing, and a career as one of the first web designers in the professional sports world. Twelve years in Wānaka followed, facilitating Zero Waste and Enviroschools programmes alongside teachers, young people, and community - and being drawn, through that work, into a Māori way of seeing the world. That learning continues. Right now it means Kā Taka o te Marama and Tātai Aroraki - the Māori lunar calendar and Māori astronomy. Not as a credential. As a practice. The day trips are about connection between people and place. Slowed down, let in. Energy transferred. And running through all of it, a photography experience that clients consistently tell us was the most fun photoshoot they've ever been on. Candid, professional, slightly directed... chasing dramatic light without ever making it feel laboured. Every image is edited by hand. The nights go further. A private immersion in astronomy that leaves people understanding their place in the universe like never before, with the photographs to prove it actually happened. Emma holds the other half together. With a background in emergency nursing, she’s behind our health & safety practices, our delicious seasonal kai, also a photographer, qualified astroguide and the reason everything is as safe as it is considered. Currently studying on a te reo journey she too offers an understanding to our manuhiri of te ao Māori. Every AuthenticAs experience includes a professionally edited album. Not a handful of snapshots... a real body of work, crafted by hand. Simon is guiding and facilitating the entire time, which means he's also watching. Reading the light. Reading the people. Noticing the moment just before the moment. The photographs that emerge from that aren't posed records of a tour... they're a story. Your story. A day in the southern lakes, a night under its stars, a connection to a place that has been shaping people for longer than any of us have been here. Edited with care, delivered with intention. Something you'll return to long after the feeling fades. With a wealth of five star reviews to show for our commitment to our craft we are excited to meet you.
Description
There are experiences that don't just stay with you ... they change the way you see. This is one of those. The Starry Night Adventure is a private two-hour immersion in the Southern night sky, guided by Simon ... a holder of a BSc (Hons) in Astrophysics whose understanding of the heavens has been shaped equally by two decades of learning alongside the people of this place. When you look up from Aotearoa, kā whetū are first and foremost the tīpuna ... the ancestors. Simon guides from that understanding, holding their mana high, weaving in the Western astronomy that followed. Not two separate ways of looking at the same sky. One sky, seen whole. Simon collects you from your accommodation in JAS ... one of the last six Land Rover Defenders imported into Aotearoa ... and drives you to a location chosen for that night. ... the conditions, the moon phase, the season, the sky. No two nights are the same. Under one of the darkest skies in Aotearoa, the Milky Way reveals itself properly for the first time for most people who see it. It has structure, depth, and weight. It takes your breath away. The evening begins with your eyes. Simon orients you ... stars, planets, constellations, the stories woven through them across cultures and across time. Then binoculars bring clusters and the Magellanic Clouds closer. Then the smartscope reaches into deep space, pulling up nebulae and distant galaxies in real time, colours and structures your eyes simply cannot access on their own. Beautiful images developing above you as you watch. At the right moment ... chosen by Simon to make the most of the sky above you ... the guiding pauses and the camera takes over. A dedicated astro portrait session, unhurried, placing you inside the frame of the Southern night sky. Considered, crafted, and edited by hand. Your full edited gallery delivered within 24 hours of being dropped back at your accommodation. Then, at the end of the night, Simon hands you a cardboard tube. Inside is an A2 fine art print of the Southern night sky. A nightscape, archival quality, ready to frame hang. Not a souvenir. A piece of the sky you stood under, made by the person who guided you through it, handed to you before the night is over. Every photograph on this listing was taken on an actual AuthenticAs tour. No models, no staging. This is what you will leave with. Suitable for ages 5 and up. Private, unhurried, and shaped around your group ... One Sky, Seen Whole works as well for a curious eight year old as it does for their grandparents.
What to expect
Simon collects you from your accommodation as darkness settles over the southern lakes. A short journey in JAS to a location chosen for that evening's conditions. Two hours under a dark southern sky ... beginning with your own eyes, then binoculars pulling clusters and the Magellanic Clouds closer, then the smartscope reaching into deep space. At the right moment the guiding pauses and the portrait session begins, unhurried, the sky doing what it does above you. Simon guiding, interpreting, and photographing throughout. The drive back to your accommodation, the night still with you. And before you say goodnight, a cardboard tube pressed into your hands.
