Resources for hosts
Running a hosting business in New Zealand
Practical guidance for setting up and running a compliant, sustainable experience business in Aotearoa.
01.Business structure
Most Good Finds hosts operate as sole traders, the simplest structure in New Zealand. You don't need to register a separate company to host experiences, though you may choose to as your business grows.
Your main options:
- Sole trader: straightforward to set up, income declared on your personal tax return (IR3). Most common for hosts starting out.
- Partnership: if hosting with someone else, you share income and liability.
- Limited liability company (LLC): separates personal and business liability. Registered with the Companies Office (companiesoffice.govt.nz).
- Self-employed contractor: common if you already operate a tourism or activity business.
02.New Zealand Business Number (NZBN)
An NZBN is a unique identifier for your business. While not mandatory for sole traders, it makes it easier to interact with government agencies and other businesses.
You can register for an NZBN for free at nzbn.govt.nz. Sole traders can link it to their IRD number.
03.Industry licences and permits
Depending on what your experience involves, you may need specific licences or permits. Common ones for Good Finds hosts:
- Food Act registration: required if you prepare or sell food to the public (managed through your local council).
- Alcohol licence: required if alcohol is served as part of your experience.
- Adventure activity operator registration: required for adventure activities with significant risk (managed by WorkSafe NZ).
- Transport licence: required if you carry guests in a vehicle with more than 9 seats.
Contact your local council or the relevant government agency to confirm what applies to your specific experience type.
04.Public liability insurance
Public liability insurance is required for all active listings on Good Finds It protects you if a guest is injured or their property is damaged during your experience.
- Minimum cover: $1,000,000 per event.
- Your policy must cover your specific activity type. Tell your insurer exactly what you do.
- Renew annually and keep your certificate of currency accessible.
05.Contracts with guests
While Good Finds' platform terms cover the booking relationship, you may also want your own participant agreement covering:
- Acknowledgement of risks specific to your activity.
- Health and medical disclosures (e.g. fitness requirements, pregnancy, heart conditions).
- Photo/video consent.
- Cancellation and refund terms (must align with your Good Finds listing settings).
